Dev Anand - A Star Still Shining in the Hindi Film Industry

Fondly known as the evergreen actor of Bollywood, Dev Anand is one versatile actor who stole the hearts of many. Not only was he a master in acting, but he was also film producer and director. He was born in Gurdaspur District and has the notable directors Chetan Anand and Vijay Anand as his sibling. Mother of the renowned international film maker Shekar Kapur, Sheel Kanta Kapur, is his sister.
His contribution, love and dedication towards Indian cinema made the Indian Government honor him with the prestigious Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Before being offered the role of an actor he worked at the military office. His debut movie was Hum Ek Hain. However, his first break came thorough the movie, Ziddi. He starred opposite Kamini Kaushal in this movie, which was a great success. After the success of this movie, Dev Anand turned into a producer in the year 1949. he launched Navketan, his own company.
Choosing Guru Dutt, to direct his movie Baazi, was a right decision, as the movie turned out to be great success. Taxi Driver, released in the year 1952, was a major hit. The leading lady of the movie, Kalpana Kartik, went on to become his future wife.
His unique way of dialogue delivery, while constantly nodding his head, became a favorite among his fans. His success began to grow through the 1950's with movies such as Insaniyat and Kala Pani. His performance in the latter, won Dev Anand the award for best actor. Six of his films in which he was paired opposite Suraiya, were super hits.
His debut movie in color was Guide, in which he played a role opposite Waheeda Rehman. This movie was based on a novel written by the notable writer, R.K. Narayan. This movie sees a great performance of Dev Anand, which moves through various emotions such as humor, romance, greed and finally salvation.
Marking his reunification with Vijay Anand, he made the movie Jewel Thief, which featured the most glamorous ladies like Vyjayanthimala, Tanuja, Helen, Faryal and Anju Mahendra. Johnny Mera Naam, which too was a result of their collaboration, was a great success. His directorial debut Hare Rama Hare Krishna saw the appearance of Zeenat Aman, a sensational actress. Yet another actress who was launched by him was Tina Munim.
