Ajay Devgan - A Talented Actor

A successful director, producer and of course a superb actor, Vishal Veeru Devgan, is none other than Ajay Devgan. He is married to the celebrated Bollywood actress Kajol. Ajay is the first Bollywood actor to purchase an aircraft for his personal use such as travelling to shooting locations and promotions.
The son of noted stunt choreographer Veeru Devgan, Ajay Devgan made his debut in the Indian Hindi film industry with the movie Phool Aur Kante. He won the Filmfare Best Debut Award. Jigar, in which he starred opposite Karishma Kapoor, was his next big hit. He also acted in action movies such as Ek Hi Raasta and Platform. Some of his successful hits with the noted director Harry Baweja were Dilwale, Suhaag and Vijaypath.
After appearing in a series of action movies, Ajay Devgan appeared in the romantic comedy Ishq. In the year 1998, he acted in the movie Zakhm, which was directed by Mahesh Bhatt. This performance won him the National Film Award for best actor and the Star Screen Award for the same role. His best hit in the year 1999 was Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, which was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
Ajay had acted with the renowned director Ram Gopal Verma in two movies. Both these movies, Company and Bhoot went on to become major commercial hits. Though his movie Legend of Bhagat Singh, was a box office failure, he was awarded the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance. This movie also won him the second National Film Award.
After being involved for a long time as an action and romantic hero, Ajay Devgan appeared in a negative role in the movie Deewangee. This movie won him many awards in the villain category. Other movies in which he played villainous roles were Khakee and Kaal.
His major hit in 2003 was the action movie Qayamat, City Under Threat, which was very well filmed and also featured many modern, high-end gadgets. Gangaajal, a film by Prakash Jha was another huge success of Ajay. He has acted in many other politically oriented movies such as Halla Bol and Rajneeti.
Ajay Devgan's combination with the director Rohit Shetty has given 3 comical hits, Golmaal, Golmaal Returns and Golmaal 3. In 2010 Ajay appeared in the 3-D animated movie, Toonpur Ka Super Hero, where he plays the role of a movie star who gets kidnapped by the Devtoons of Toonpur.
Fans of this great star can look forward to his upcoming movies such as Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji, Tezz and Singam.

X-Men: First Class Proves the Doubters Wrong?

Although there's currently an embargo on official reviews for the X-Men: First Class film, word of mouth is that this latest mutant flick easily surpasses all four of the previous X-Men films in terms of quality. Considering how loathed the project was by fans when it was announced, to now have critics such as television host Jonathan Ross call First Class 'the best X-Men movie ever' is quite a huge achievement for the Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) directed prequel.
After Brett Ratner's X-Men: The Last Stand was met with harsh reviews, plans for an X-Men 4 movie were put on hold. Fox decided to focus on mutant solo adventures such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine and to no surprise Wolverine bombed. It seemed the X-Men franchise was suffering from forcing supporting characters into the films without any development and little screen time. The original trilogy was criticised for focusing heavily on Wolverine whilst ignoring other significant characters such as Cyclops and Colossus, whilst X-Men Origins was panned for cramming too many secondary mutants in for no reason. The X-Men franchise had apparently run out of steam and it was back to the drawing board for Fox.
So when X-Men: First Class was announced fans assumed they would be getting a reboot movie based on the comic book series of the same name. It would mean previously under developed characters from the films such as Cyclops, Iceman and Angel would finally get a chance to be redeemed on screen, whilst paving the way for franchise that reflected the comic books perfectly. Fox had other ideas.
Instead Bryan Singer and co insisted First Class was not a reboot and instead a prequel to the original trilogy. Still not too alarming, but things got worse when the line-up for the film was announced with secondary mutants such as Havok, Mystique, Banshee, Darwin and Angel Salvadore sharing the spotlight with a young Professor X (walking and with hair) and Magneto. Who were these secondary characters? Why were they replacing key members such as Cyclops, Jean Grey and Iceman? Then it was announced the flick was a period movie set in the 60′s around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis, which opened up a whole load of continuity worms.
Havok (Alex Summers) who was originally Cyclops's younger brother in the comics would now be his father? Mystique being a teenager would mean she would be well into her fifties if not sixties by the time the original X-Men movie came around. Professor X having hair and walking was too far from the source material. Telepath and Diamond mutant Emma Frost had now appeared in two X-Men movies with massive age gaps between depictions. It was time to hit the panic button for the fans.
Yet somehow despite these shortcomings, X-Men: First Class has incredibly overcome all these obstacles in its path supposedly becoming the best X-movie to date. Early reviews are indicating First Class is more like Batman Begins then any other superhero movie, focusing more on character development and drama instead of character cameos and pointless plot drifts. It's a shame Fox couldn't have done this at the beginning as ten years later we are still waiting for the epic mutant blockbuster we all wanted. If First Class proves to be a hit, who knows what the sequel could achieve.

The Boys From Brazil

At first glance, "The Boys of Brazil" seemed to deal with unusual subject matter, it seemed to come with a high pedigree and as a result I was initially expecting a great deal. Top notch stars such as Gregory Peck and Laurence Olivier further whetted my appetite and I knew that Director Franklin J. Schaffner had a proven track record with titles such as "Papillon," "Patton" and the original "Planet of the Apes." "Welcome Home" starring Jane Fonda and John Voigt is another career highlight and another particular favorite of mine.
Originally released in 1978 and based on a book by Ira Levin, I saw the film as a teenager although it didn't particularly stick in my mind. When I noticed a recent re-run in the terrestrial TV schedules I decided to do some reminiscing.
While attempting to explore a controversial topic, it proved to be an effective although ultimately shallow and unsatisfying thriller involving a Nazi cloning plot organized by Dr Joseph Mengele. Death camp Doctor Mengele, who performed infamous concentration camp experiments in attempts to develop a superior Aryan race, is now exiled in South America and still pursuing his dream of a Fourth Reich. Gregory Peck is excellent as Dr Mengele as is Laurence Olivier as a Simon Wiesenthal type professional Nazi Hunter, Ezra Lieberman, who hears of and then attempts to foil the plot. Other famous faces featured include an underused James Mason, a young Steve Guttenberg, Lili Palmer and Denholm Elliot. Watch out for Prunella Scales a.k.a. Sybill Fawlty too.
The scientifically possible but very improbable plot might hinder your enjoyment but the two main stars, high profile director and the quality cast live up to their reputations and provide good value for money although everybody involved has done much better.
In many ways this is a wasted opportunity and I personally was looking for something with more depth. No real attempt was made to address the legal, ethical or scientific aspects of cloning and the age old nature or nurture question concerning child development was hinted at but not fully explored.
It might be useful as a sixth form vehicle to provoke a discussion on cloning and associated topics such as GM food but my original appraisal from thirty plus years ago turned out to be highly accurate. Maybe I was a reasonably cultured teenager after all.

True Grit (2010) Blu-Ray Review

It's uncertain whether Joel and Ethan Coen set out to make their most commercially successful film in a 30 year career by electing to remake the classic John Wayne Western True Grit as their 15th feature, however it has been by far their biggest grossing domestic picture to date, taking twice as much at the box office than their previous Oscar winner No Country For Old Men which kick-started their partnership with Paramount producer Scott Rudin a few years back.
Having never been much of a Western fan, aside from the superior 'Spaghetti' variety of Sergio Leone especially the "Dollars Trilogy" which propelled Clint Eastwood to international stardom, I wasn't the first in line to see this new version despite it being the latest offering from the Coen Brothers. Admittedly, I tend to prefer their original comedies but I was intrigued to see this primarily for the acclaimed performances of Jeff Bridges as 'Rooster' Cogburn and Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross both of whom earned Academy Award nominations.
When her father is brutally murdered in Fort Smith, Arkansas by the cowardly outlaw Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), 14 year old Mattie Ross comes to town to collect his body and hire a U.S. Marshal to track down the killer and bring him to justice. Out of the Sheriff's recommendations she selects 'Rooster' Cogburn as he has the reputation of being the most ruthless. Mattie is exceptionally astute for her years and has a commanding knowledge of the laws of business enabling her to run rings around the local inhabitants outwitting them in a series of trades over her late father's effects, raising sufficient money to bankroll her revenge.
There aren't that many structural differences from the Hal Wallis production, both are true to the spirit of the Charles Portis novel. Jeff Bridge's Cogburn is clearly a cold-blooded slayer and a broken man; much less avuncular or amusingly soused than John Wayne and without his immediate warmth or charm. Hailee Steinfeld is the same age as her character and despite her smarts she is obviously still a vulnerable young girl, whereas Kim Darby was 21 when she played a hardier, tomboyish Mattie Ross in the 1969 original.
Although the biggest difference in casting is Matt Damon in the role of the Texas Ranger LaBoeuf who hopes to claim the bounty out on Chaney for killing a State Senator. The part initially played by country singer Glenn Campbell was very much a cameo whereas the Coens have transferred a lot of the affability from the Duke's take on Cogburn to Damon's LaBoeuf making him more sympathetic thus transforming the story from a basic two-hander into a more complex triangle.
The Blu-ray edition reveals the huge visual accomplishment achieved by the Coen Brother's regular cinematographer Roger Deakins. The colour palette is distinctly different to the previous version which was bathed in California sunshine so typical of Westerns made at the time; instead we have bitter cold, steely blue skies starkly contrasted with delicate snowflakes. The 1080p picture sports faultless clarity and high detail particularly noticeable in hair and skin tones, whilst the DTS-HD 5.1 soundtrack crackles with the ambient sounds of the great outdoors, wind and water are well represented and the surprisingly few gunshots deeply resonate.
It's also worth mentioning Carter Burwell's disarmingly simplistic score which riffs around the two spiritual tunes "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" and "Lean On Jesus" which were first used to striking effect in Charles Laughton's classic film noir The Night of the Hunter, clearly a massive influence on the Coen Brothers. There is a small selection of fairly standard extras the one exception being the 30 minute documentary Charles Portis: The Greatest Writer You've Never Heard Of... which profiles the life and work of the author and compares both film versions to the original text.
True Grit is a milestone picture for the Coen Brothers that not only provides them with their first unabashed box office hit but demonstrates an assured maturity and artistic commitment which is no longer confined to the low budget obscurity that prevented so many of their significant early films from reaching justifiably larger audiences.
