What Does HDMI Mean and Is It Important To Me?

You may have heard or seen the terms HDMI, HDMI receiver and HDMI cables, but you may not know what HDMI means or what it is for. Here is some information to help you understand what HDMI is and if you think you may need HDMI cables or receivers.
The abbreviation HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface. This term of course only applies to HD TVs and is not interchangeable with other standard televisions. An HDMI receiver is a catch-all device to hook up your media devices such as gaming platforms, dvd players and surround sound speakers. Because many HD TVs only have one to two HDMI plug ports, you will only be able to plug in one to two of your electronic devices directly into the TV.
This is a hassle because if you have surround sound stereo speakers hooked up to your TV, you won't want to unplug these every time you want to hook up another device, so one port will always be in use. Likewise, it is a hassle to unplug and switch cables from your cable box to your xbox or dvd player whenever you want to use one instead of the other. Enter the HDMI receiver. Many receivers have three or more ports to plug in audio/video inputs and outputs so you can maximize your home theater system. The HDMI receiver will manage all of your devices in one and send all of the information to your television through an HDMI cable.
An HDMI cable is a "superwire" of sorts. These cables can transfer all sorts of information through one cable instead of several. Think of the cables you are used to using with non HD TVs: the wires with the red, white and yellow connectors, each for either audio or visual input or output. HDMI cables bring all of these into one simplified cable that takes up only one plug port on your television instead of three.
HDMI technology really streamlines your devices and can improve your home viewing experience with the latest technology. And, like with many other technological devices, what you pay for is what you might get with many HDMI receivers or cables. A less expensive HDMI receiver may have 3 plug ports while a more expensive counterpart may have up to 7. As with any larger purchase, doing some research on the internet for different brands and types of HDMI receivers - as well as the cables - may save you time and money. Before purchasing a product that may have a history of technical issues or is not worth the money spent, read consumer reviews posted on internet websites of companies selling the brand you are interested in. Check out other consumer tech review websites to find out the most recommended type of HDMI receivers and cables which will suit your budget and your home theater setup needs.
Check all of your devices to make sure they are compatible with HDMI receivers. Some gaming systems are not HDMI ready. You may only have two devices - a cable box and one gaming platform - that you use most often and will plug right into your TV. In this case, you may not need to purchase an HDMI receiver until you add more devices.

Movie Review: Turning 30 Steps Away

The good thing about a film like Turning 30, is that not only did it get made but also got a proper plot. Now the sad part about such a film is that it promotes a kind of mindset that is downright scary. Alankrita Shrivastava's bittersweet take on a woman's life spiraling out of control just around her 30th birthday meanders from being stupid to even nonsensical and is an inglorious tribute to Sex and the City.
Turning 30 Plot
Naina (Gul Panag) has everything going for her but like most young people she doesn't 'value' it enough. Ungrateful and thankless as she is, Naina scoffs when her textbook boyfriend, Rishab (Sid Makkar), tells her to look lovingly at children as they browse through groceries in a supermarket; mocks him when he cooks for her, kicks him off the bed when he's late for work- you get the picture? On the night when she thinks the boy is going to pop the question he dumps her for a close family friend's foreign returned daughter. To make matters worse her advertising career goes for a toss. Her gay boss gives in to the whims of his partner, a copywriter who took all the credit for Naina's award winning campaign, and her strange super boss with an even stranger stubble only mouths irrelevant one-liners. Thus starts Naina's journey of discovering her true self which entails kicking off with an ex-flame, Jai (Purab Kohli), who simply walked out on her and now four years later just wants to marry her. Her two close gal pals try to make things better but then Rukhsana's (Jeneva Talwar) bag of woes is always full- her philandering husband doesn't change his ways even after she delivers a baby that she though would set things right and Malini's (Tillotama Shome) dealing with her own girlfriend issues. Naina ends up penning her thoughts as an outlet and lo and behold Malini gets it published. Suddenly at 31 everything falls into place for Naina.
Even though it's doomed with a plot that has been done to death and marred by a screenplay that is as predictable as boiling an egg, Turning 30 could have been a sweetish film that would have made for a passable watch. Instead Naina's journey of finding herself is so fraught with utter absurdity that one wonders whatever made seemingly intelligent women like Gul Panag and Tillotama Shome agree to something like this?
First and foremost since when was turning 30 such a dreaded thing? You lost me at hello! When things are nothing going her way Naina tries to find some catharsis by devoting herself to a project called 'Post 30 Club', a place for which she is designing an advertising campaign. Now this club celebrates 'aging with grace' but pray tell me why were we subjected to septuagenarian women singing its praises? The whole stress on turning 30 and just about everyone telling Naina their way of dealing with 'aging'- new haircut, lingerie, massages and ahem...special toys; the whole thing seems so off the radar. And Naina's tedious Sex and the City inspired narration makes it worse for she makes it sound like reading some boring school essay.
Gul Panag fits the bill but Naina is a strange woman and while Panag tries hard to make her believable, the unbelievable silliness surrounding the character doesn't help. Shome shines in a few scenes and her 30 seconds of kicking her lover away makes up big time. Purab Kohli plays an artist which pretty much explains why he looks like a curtain rod with colorful scarves draped around his neck; Makkar plays a banker and dresses like one. The acting's very staged maybe because they all speak in English; thankfully they don't look at the camera for approval but still wait for cues like a appalling school play.
Final Words About Turning 30
There isn't anything wrong with such travesty being siphoned off as cinema and we have, in the past, been subjected to much worse but the miserable part is that for a film that is directed by a woman, Turning 30 is really insensitive towards the gender. Naina and Malini smoke in front of their pregnant friend, Rukhsana's husband is cheating on her but she doesn't mind it for she has a baby and the baby needs her father so she will live with it and many such things in the film make you shake your head in disbelief.
The real issue with the film is that Naina's reasons for losing it aren't explored at all; she desperately wants to get Rishab back but neither she nor anyone else knows whatever for. All we get as a parting gift is Naina's rather Fortune Cookie like one-liners where she signs off by saying 'all the answers are in my book.'

How to Make Contacts in the Film Industry Using Networking Letters

There'll come a time during your search for film industry work in which you have to speak to somebody you do not know. They have got absolutely no idea who you are, however, you would like to speak with them for information, or for a referral, or perhaps to solicit a position. This can be a delicate balance; you ought not risk appear self-centered or maybe rude and also you need to seem someone they should help.
There's two conceivable reasons why you will need to call a stranger. Either a friend has referred you to them as well as supplied you their information, or perhaps you might have found their information another manner and you're simply just calling them without warning.
It isn't really a good idea to phone at once. Chances are you will disrupt them during work or anything else crucial, and that will immediately put you in their bad books. Additionally, you are giving them a call seeking assistance or support; which will probably be an in depth phone call and it's improbable are going to be able to do very much without thinking about it first. Therefore, the very first thing to do is to write a letter or email to them outlining who you are and also what you need. That way once you do call up, they will be much better organized and comprehend exactly what the conversation will be regarding.
Exactly how do you write a networking letter?
The key action to take is always to provide some reason why the stranger should even read through the letter, let alone aid you. To begin with, these letters are used to acquire information, suggestions, and contacts, not to find a job. Don't demand a position, do not send a resume. Asking for information demonstrates initiative, but asking for favours often comes across awkwardly.
Second, ensure the letter is professional. Ensure there are no spelling errors or errors, and if you are mailing a letter via post instead of through email, ensure it's neatly written, preferably with a word processor rather than by hand. In case you are sending an email, be sure you get rid of any "silly" signatures you might have put in place. Try to have an email address which contains your name, as opposed to using something like 'fuzzy_fish_89'.
Effectively, mistakes in your correspondence will disqualify you, because they display insufficient attention to detail and a lack of care, two things which are extremely important. Thus just take enough time to really get it right.
Lastly, make sure that when you say you'll call the person, that you call the person. Ensure that you follow-up and do anything you say, and in case they do agree to meet, avoid being late! Again, it shows insufficient care and attention to detail, and that is exactly what you need to avoid!

Women In Science Fiction And Fantasy Break The Mold

Women in science fiction and fantasy films are free from stereotypical restraints often slapped on other female characters. In traditional sitcoms especially, women seem to be thrust into unoriginal character molds, either quirkily manic, the lovable hot girl whom all guys want or a passive aggressive, mean middle-aged mother.
Most female characters seen in science fiction tend to be more complex than that. They usually have complicated romantic storylines, just as in other dramas, and yes, they're often pretty hot, too. However, sci-fi writers tend to give women more credit for their intelligence, empathy and kick-ass abilities than writers of other series do.
The great thing about women in science fiction is the range of personalities that are represented. These women are often operating in outer space, such as the much praised Star Trek heroines Seven of Nine from Star Trek: Voyager and Nyota Uhura, a character that made waves for being part of the first interracial kiss on television.
Storylines set in outer space actually provide a fantastical and fascinating place for a plot to unfold, especially as it relates to women. In addition to the romantic storylines that inevitably come up, living in a limited space such as a space ship and dealing with the unpredictable natures of intergalactic enemies will bring out multiple facets of a character's personality. This gives writers an opportunity to develop interesting, dynamic female roles that go beyond slapstick humor or trivialities.
Of course, there are plenty of sci-fi heroines who have made their mark by kicking butt back on Earth as well.
Sarah Connor, mother to the all-important John Connor in the "Terminator" series, is probably one of the most memorable take-no-prisoner's women in sci-fi history, at least as she appears in "Terminator 2: Judgement Day." Her dedication to keeping her son safe and trying to save the world transform her from a scared damsel in distress into a hardcore femme fatale.
Let's not forget Agent Scully, the "X-Files" heroine who was the ultimate strong woman of the 1990s. As the rational scientist throughout most of the show, who based her beliefs on evidence rather than faith, Scully was a departure from the stereotype that men are rational while women believe solely in what they feel. Gillian Anderson's portrayal of the smart, tough character left a lasting impression on viewers for years to come.
Going further back we have Jaime Sommers, the main character in "The Bionic Woman." Sommers becomes superhuman when she is saved from a skydiving accident by receiving bionic implants. She becomes a CIA operative in exchange for the life-saving implants, an agreement arranged by her boyfriend, "Six Million Dollar Man" Steve Austin. Sommers is an example of the survivor character, who is alive against the odds and now not only has to come to grips with the way her body and entire life has changed, but also has to fend for herself during dangerous undercover operations. She is a complex, interesting character whose storyline and personality traits enhance the show dramatically.
These are but a few of the fascinating female characters with which science fiction shows are populated. The genre continues to push the limits with storytelling and character development, which no doubt means there are more exciting, memorable heroines the world has yet to meet.

Mid-Summer TV Line-Up

You gotta love Asylum who makes these "mock busters" of the real movies. They did this before when "Battle: LA" and they did "Battle: Los Angeles". This time they did "Almighty Thor" the day after the summer blockbuster "Thor" flick. People this movie is really bad but the trailer is funny when Thor uses an Uzi to take down Loki! I HAD to watch it just to see that!
The film is about Loki (Richard Grieco) who wants Thor's magic hammer to control Asgard and earth! Grieco didn't go over the top like I expected but it was still terrible performance. Thor (Cory Deal) is a new comer to the movies and he did audition for the theatrical movie. He is a big guy but needs a few more acting lessons. Wrestler Kevin Nash is Ordin and he is killed in the beginning. He does his best raspy Dark Knight impression. Special effects are good to poor! See it for a good laugh and on cable! People who are wondering why Syfy are doing Thor movies all the time is because Norse mythology has no copyright!
HAWAII 5-O--FINALE
I must tell you that the finale of this TV show was awesome. McGarrett (Alex O' Loughlin)is set up for killing the governor Pat Jameson (Jean Smart) Danno (Scott Caan) doesn't go home with his family, Chin Ho (Daniel Dae Kim) is now lieutenant and Kono (Grace Park) is arrested! Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos) makes a fatal guest appurtenance. I can't wait for the 2nd season!
SINBAD AND THE MINATOR
ORIGINAL SYFY MOVIE-MAY 21, 2011
ACTION/ADVENTURE/FANTASY
This movie is the usual low-budget for Syfy but it has a very handsome lead Manu Bennett (30 Days of Night and The Marine)who is very Australian. One day Hollywood will use an Arab-American to play Sinbad for this character is of Middle East decent! The two reasons to watch this is Steven Grives (Beastmaster) as Al-Jibar. He is good at being an over the top bad guy and Pacharo Mzembe is the black man is part of Sinbad's crew who lives through the ENTIRE movie!
SINGLE LADIES
ORIGINAL SERIES ON VH1-MONDAYS AT 9:00PM STARTING MAY 30, 2011
ROMANCE/COMEDY/DRAMA
The show should be on BET or TVOne! It is about two sexy, smart black women Stacey Dash and Lisa Raye McCoy living and loving in Atlanta. It is worth seeming at least the first episode for the one of the creators and producer is Queen Latifah! The other writer and producer is Stacey Littlejohn who is one of the few black female successful producers. She did All of Us, the Wanda Sykes show and Cedric the Entertainer Presents. It is only eight shows and it is the first scripted show on VH1 in history. It is good if you like soap operas with some 'flava.' I hope it stays on for awhile.

Reviewed: Something Borrowed [2011]

Something Borrowed follows Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) as she meets Dex (Colin Egglesfield) at university where they become best friends with feelings clearly developing but neither of them acting on said feelings. So when Rachel's best friend the selfish and obnoxious Darcy (Kate Hudson) shows up and asks Dex out, Rachel gives her blessing, Dex says yes and several years later they are engaged to be married.
This leaves Rachel distraught for letting Dex slip through her fingers and with the cowardly and wimpish Dex (I'm sure just what ladies look for in a man) still conflicted as to what to do next. After Rachel's birthday celebrations though, she and Dex end up sleeping together and supposed hilarity ensues as they try yet again ignore the chemistry between them and just let life run its course.
Thank god for Ethan (John Krasinski) Rachel's friend who gave a voice of reason to proceedings by at least attempting to beat some sense into the main characters who seemed to be oblivious to everything around them. I think my main fault with the movie was the storyline and the way we are supposed to feel for Rachel despite the fact that she didn't make a go of it with Dex, everything that happened to her was self inflicted and she has slept with her best friend's fiancé; and given that Darcy isn't a very nice person to say the least that either of them hung around with her in the first place.
The supporting cast outside the four main characters didn't add to the film in any way shape or form. With some movies you get the token celebrities who show up for 10 seconds, say a line and then leave again and this is how the rest of the cast felt to me for the entire movie. They were just written in for one line and then would disappear never to be seen or heard from again.
Apart from a few witty remarks here and a bit of slapstick, there was not much comedy in the film with the overall feel of it leaning more towards a drama with a bit of comedy rather than the other way around which I feel is the better mix for this genre. There was nothing wrong with the acting with Goodwin and Egglesfield doing their jobs and creating some chemistry but it was merely a minor consolation which can't cover up the rest of the issues highlighted.
As romcom's go this was one of the worse that I've seen so much so that even if your an avid fan of this type of movie you'll have a hard time getting any pleasure out of watching it. Time to forget about this and move onto another one.

Broadway, Off Broadway and Off Off Broadway - What Is the Difference?

Most of the theaters in Manhattan are clustered around the Times Square area called, appropriately, the Theater District. However only 6 of the 39 major theaters are actually located on Broadway.
To further complicate matters, several "off-Broadway" theaters have addresses on Broadway.
And this is not even to mention off-off-Broadway. Is this a case of two negatives making a positive and these are secretly on Broadway but don't want us to know? Or are they not in New York at all? Maybe all theaters outside of NYC are off-off-Broadway. Are the ones in China off-off-off-off-Broadway? Okay, that is silly.
No, it seems that a Broadway mailing address really has nothing to do with the designations. Go figure.
The distinction comes down to numbers (doesn't everything?) The number of seats in the theater determines the title. Broadway theaters have more than 500 seats, off-Broadway theaters sport 101 - 499 seats and off-off-Broadway few than 100.
So, based on this designation, my living room - with my son and his cousin's often spirited performances- is an off-off-Broadway theater. Cool.
Most theaters in New York City, and other towns for that matter, started out as burlesque halls. Very few started out as "legitimate theaters." There just wasn't a need for many. This high class entertainment was out of the reach of all but the very rich society. But burlesque was a very popular art form in the mid to late 1800's.
Later these popular theaters became Vaudeville houses and many, many more were built as this art form swept the country. Most of the remaining ornate music and stage theaters in cities around the country, including the Orpheum and Rialto Theaters, were built or remodeled to feature Vaudeville shows.
Popular former Vaudeville acts that are still known today, largely due to their popularity in movies, radio and television, are George Burns & Gracie Allen, Jack Benny, Buster Keaton, WC Fields, May West, Al Jolson and Abbott & Costello. Rose Marie (the Dick Van Dyke Show) is the last surviving (as of this writing) major Vaudeville star. She was known then as Baby Rose Marie.

The Ultimate Office Party - Murder Mystery Events

Corporate events can be a tedious occasions. We've all been through it. Colleagues and Managers forced awkwardly together in a budget-restricted venue and fed party food and cheap champagne whilst attempting to make conversation isn't really anybody's idea of a good time.
Thankfully, there is an exciting alternative which is becoming increasingly popular amongst businesses today. What starts out as a pleasant social evening is soon faced with an unpleasant twist - there's been a murder amongst the guests! Combined with plenty of delicious food and drink, and excellent themed costumes, these role-play gatherings are the latest office team-building experiences livening up the UK's office lull.
As any company director knows, it is virtually impossible for an organisation to be successful and profitable without an enthusiastic team who mesh well together behind the scenes. Unfortunately, we never get to choose who we work with and the pressure of daily tasks can prevent us from being able to properly get to know the people we see every day of the week. From a business perspective, a fragmented team who can't work well together is massively detrimental to productivity, therefore employers have always been ensuring that communication is supported and working relationships are strongly encouraged.
What better way than to get the whole team involved than with one of these engaging events? The choices for plots, locations and venues are now practically infinite. Whether you fancy flying back to the 1920's, donning your Gangster hat and tie, or perhaps flavouring it up with some burlesque feathers at the Moulin Rouge, each event integrates professional actors at their venues where drinks, dinner and prizes are also included.
companies generally offer events in two standard formats; 'roleplay murder mystery' and 'dinner theatre murder mystery'. Roleplay murder mystery plots are created for all age groups and usually for smaller parties, whereas the dinner theatre murder mystery is usually the preferred choice for office parties. Plots falling into this category have been performed to groups as small as 6 individuals right up to huge groups as large as 400.
As part of a dinner theatre murder mystery, you will witness the murder taking place before the story and clues begin to gradually unfold. You and your co-workers will all receive clue packs and an opportunity to thoroughly question the fiendish suspects, played by professional actors. Amidst all the suspicion, there are various token parts which can be played by you or a colleague, before a prize is awarded to the person who successfully solves the mystery.
Of course, the brilliance of these kinds of events is that people don't really turn up with the intention of becoming the next Inspector Morse or Sherlock Holmes; instead it's simply a team of people coming together from a normally pressurised and busy environment and instead simply enjoying a good laugh and a little mystifying escapism.
Keep in mind that a run-of-the-mill corporate dinner may still be more appropriate in some cases. For example, it is not recommended to bring along a prospective client to one of these events and have somebody scream hysterically in their face. Chances are they will be slightly concerned about your commitment as a result. However, these hysterical 'whodunits' are an excellent way of getting the team communicating, concentrating and participating. Unbelievably, they can even affect a person's work ethic and unearth skills such as logical thinking, discipline, motivation or commitment that perhaps were not evident before.

A Virtual Smorgasbord For Exhibitions Around The World

There are lot of exciting International Exhibitions like Science Exhibition and Trade Shows Exhibitions going on around the world. Many of them have been arranged by the professionals in their particular fields of expertise. There are several websites that are dedicated to informing the audiences at large about venues, timing and other arrangements. Many times organizers prefer to inform their patron through the internet, as not only it is less expensive, more people spend more time on the internet than ever before.
Some websites categorize international exhibitions, country-wise and carry many different types of exhibitions from trade shows to art exhibits from around the world. Organizers are given options to fill out and submit forms that give exhibition details. Not only organizers but anyone interested in letting the world know of a niche event will be able to get their message to world simply & effectively.
Many a time, interesting events like a rare Gauguin art show that hasn't been seen since the late 1980s could be doing the rounds in the U.S. Now, sites that let people know about international exhibitions are useful for art-house enthusiasts as well as tourists who aren't familiar with a city. But both groups benefit from such websites as all you have to do is visit a website catering to exhibitions around the world & instantly find something to do in your corner of the world.
Trade shows, exhibitions like the Paper world Middle East is a pretty big show that covers Middle East, African, Indian and South Asian markets. And the name says it all, the exhibition show cases writing implements, paper products, office equipment & accessories. Such information is easily accessible to even small business vendors in a remote corner of the Asian market due to the internet.
A science exhibition can be as diverse as a general practitioner conference & exhibition or simply an exhibition showcasing the most modern techniques of embalming and mummification. Science exhibitions are the precursors to trade exhibitions were generic techniques and patents are unveiled. Many trade professionals too may attend science exhibitions if it pertains to their business area.

From Runway to Glamour: The Possibilities of Modeling

Though it is a competitive industry in every aspect, a fashion design college will teach you that there are several different approaches to a professional career in the fashion industry. Aside from accessories and apparel designers, there are people that specialize in merchandising, marketing, public relations, event coordinating, brand development, trend prediction, editing and fashion journalism, photography and of course, modeling. Though modeling is just one niche in the larger-than-life fashion industry, the inner-workings of the modeling world have proven to be complex, with multiple specialized niches of their own. There are several different types of models, and different purposes of modeling. Listed below are several examples of the varying types of of modeling, what the requirements are and if you can meet them.
High Fashion Modeling: This fashion modeling is often the basis for the stereotypical view of a model that most people have in their heads. Fashion models usually work with elite, fashion designers, or very upscale makeup and beauty companies. Perhaps what has created the stereotype is that these fashion models have a very specific look which top-labels consider the "ideal woman". They are usually a minimum of 5'9 and are extremely thin (size 0's are not uncommon). They model the most expensive, well-made clothes and beauty products, and top designers often design clothes with the specific high fashion model's body in mind. High fashion modeling is cutthroat and competitive, however these models make the most money out of all models in the industry, and some even revolutionize the fashion world to the point where they become studied subjects in fashion school classrooms.
Runway Modeling: Runway modeling often coincides with high fashion modeling, though the focus is obviously on the model's ability to travel gracefully down a runway, rather than just to pose in still photos. Once again, runway models are almost always tall, leggy and extremely slender. They also must feel comfortable walking, dancing (or even running) and just moving in general in very high heels and in all types of clothes, often including lingerie. During their runway shows, designers rely heavily on their runway models' ability to showcase their garments, so models working for top designers are also extremely well-paid for their work.
Glamour Modeling: Glamour modeling differs from high fashion modeling because it has an entirely different emphasis. There are no strict height and weight requirements for glamour models, and their work usually showcases a sexual theme. For instance, the models you see in Playboy Magazine are a good example of glamour models, or pin-up girls in calendars, or often swimsuit or lingerie models can fall under that category. Glamour models are used to sell ideas of sexuality and desire in order to endorse a product, rather than acting as a canvas to showcase high fashion apparel which sells itself based on a designer's reputation and skill.
