Reviewed: Rio [2011]

Rio is an animation from the same people that brought us Ice Age and so it has a fair amount to live up to. It follows the tale of a blue macaw, Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) who is bird-napped as a chick and smuggled into the USA to be sold. During the move though, he falls from the back of the truck and is found by Linda (Leslie Mann) who takes him in and looks after him.
The years pass by until Tulio (Rodrigo Santoro), a extremely bird obsessed ornithologist pays them a visit and offers them a chance to come to Brazil as Blu is the last male of his species and the last female, Jewel (Anne Hathaway), resides in Rio. Blu (who cannot fly) has lived a sheltered, comfortable life with Linda and is all the more happy for it whereas Jewel is the stark contrast and longs to be free from the cage that restricts her as she has tasted freedom before. So when the two meet, the fun starts to happen.
First off, Blue is one happy bird with the animation and his characteristics reflecting that. You immediately like him and this feeling doesn't fade with time. In fact each character has their unique quirks which enables the comedy to flow seamlessly. I was never gulping for air but the jokes are well written and non-stop with the movie certainly having its moments.
Rio, the movie, brings alive the carnival nature and flamboyant mood that one normally associates with Rio, the city, by including a couple of musical numbers into the story. Unfortunately they are not up to the standard of Disney- they are not very catchy or memorable. It's more pop music and rap with Will.I.Am lending his talents to the vocals than the traditional song associated with animations. The background music however certainly get across the energy and vibrancy of Rio with plenty of samba flooding your ears from the off.
The visuals of Rio are impressive (though not quite as good as Rango) and during the flying scenes in particular the city and its surroundings are well captured with many of the iconic landmarks easy to spot. It probably helped that the director Carlos Saldanha was born and raised in the city and so was able capture the true feeling of the place that other directors would not have been able to.
Did this live up to Ice Age then? Very nearly and I wouldn't mind watching it again to see how it handles a second viewing.

Show Me Love

This gentle, insightful and wonderfully realistic comedy-drama from Sweden gets my vote for best film you've probably never heard of. Amidst a constant stream of banal, exploitative and unconvincing teen movies, Lukas Moodysson's Show Me Love stands out as a testament to the truth of living through that difficult age between twelve and nineteen, especially when one is perceived to be "different" for whatever reason. As the great Roger Ebert said of this beautiful, understated masterpiece, "this film loves teenagers; most teen movies just use them." I rarely quote another critic, but this is so astute, I couldn't resist.
Moodysson's most well-known film is Lilya 4-Ever (2002), a harrowing tale of teen prostitution in Eastern Europe and the conditions that can lead to it, there or elsewhere. The first time I saw Show Me Love, I was not aware it was made by the same director and I had not yet seen any of his other films, which also include Together (2000) and A Hole in My Heart (2004), the latter of which is even more disturbing than Lilya. However, even without prior knowledge of Moodysson's always excellent work, there is a sense of impending doom throughout his first feature, a feeling that something terrible might happen at any moment; this is, in many ways, a perfect representation of what it is like to be a teenager in modern times.
The original Swedish title of this film is F**king Amal (Amal is the name of the town in which the protagonists live, not a person, so the "f**king" part is a disparaging adjective rather than a noun), and this points to the fact that the film is as much about the frustrations of living in a small, boring town as about those of growing up. Our protagonists are Elin Olsson (Alexandra Dahlstrom), a very pretty and popular girl who is too intelligent and searching to be content with her queen-bee status, and Agnes Ahlberg (Rebecca Liljeberg), her polar opposite on the social food chain. Agnes is one of the school's scapegoats, a social pariah whose only friend is Viktoria (Josefin Nyberg), a wheelchair-bound girl who, for this reason, is similarly outcast. Agnes is constantly teased and tormented at school, with persistent rumors circulating that she is a lesbian; the fact that this is actually true, and that she is infatuated with Elin, only makes things more difficult for her.
Agnes and Elin's paths irrevocably cross at a birthday party for Agnes, which Elin attends with her sister, Jessica (Erica Carlson), who convinces Elin to kiss Agnes as a joke, after which the two quickly abandon Agnes for a much livelier and more exclusive party filled with other, more popular teens. Consumed by remorse for the hurt feelings her actions have caused, Elin returns to apologize to Agnes, and the two begin a tentative friendship / courtship constantly in flux due to the many social pressures on both. Elin reluctantly agrees to date Johan Hulth (Mathias Rust), a nave, sweetly clumsy older boy who is friends with Jessica's rather arrogant and obnoxious boyfriend, Markus (Stefan Horberg), in order to divert attention from her own growing attraction to Agnes. Poor Johan genuinely believes himself to be in true love with Elin, in the way only teenagers can, while Markus is a budding macho-misogynist, not so much through his own thoughts and feelings, but as a result of the social pressures all around him.
It is a testament to the film's richness that even relatively minor characters like Markus are so convincingly fleshed out. Moodysson's films are never populated with convenient types or easy answers, and no one in this film is so simplistic as to be completely "good" or "bad." When Agnes takes out her frustrations with her friendless, bottom-rung existence on the social ladder on Viktoria during her failed birthday party (at which, before Elin and Jessica arrive, she is the only guest), it is painful to watch, and in a lesser film such a moment might be used to make the audience dislike her character. However, when she says, "We're just pretend friends because there's no one else to be with," we understand the sad truth of her harangue, as well as the motivation for it; Agnes is unfair to attack such an undeserving target, but we are unable to think less of her for it, for she is really just a confused child trying to make sense of the pain and alienation that surround her. Likewise, Viktoria is no more the helpless victim of Agnes's rage than she is deserving of it, and when she later uses her knowledge of Agnes's true feelings for Elin to try and ingratiate herself with the popular crowd, we cannot feel anything but sympathy for her; her instantly failed maneuver into a social circle of which she will never truly be a part actually only makes her all the more sympathetic, even though it is also an attempt to avenge Agnes's earlier betrayal, for which Agnes has unsuccessfully attempted to apologize.
There are too many rich and heartfelt threads to this story to fully elaborate upon them here, and all are handled with such a unique subtlety and truth that it is pointless to attempt to do so. I have rarely seen a film made up entirely of adult actors with such truthful and convincing performances, and Moodysson's script steadfastly and admirably refuses to rely on cliches or contrivances. With high school bullying and gay rights issues more at the forefront of the collective consciousness than ever, this is still a timely and important film that I think everyone should see. There is not a frame in the entire movie that contains less than complete, uncompromised honesty.

This History Of Omega Watches And The James Bond Franchise

In 1995 when Pierce Brosnan took over the role of James Bond, Omega began their very successful relationship with the James Bond franchise. In his first film, Goldeneye, Brosnan wore the Omega Seamaster Quartz Profession (model number 2541.80.00). However, the producers wanted Bond to look for sophisticated so they changed the watch model to the Omega Seamaster Professional Chronometer (model number 2531.80.00) in later movies.
Prior to Goldeneye, Bond was known for wearing the Submariner watch. However, with the change in product placement in movies, Omega were much happier to work with the Bond franchise and supply products and finance, something their predecessor avoided.
In 2002, for the 40th anniversary of Jame Bond, Omega released a limited edition (10,007 units) of their watch, model 2537.80.00. This was identical to the 2531.80.00 apart from the blue watch dial had the 007 logo inscribed across it and machined in to the caseback. 007 was also inscribed on to the clasp.
The most recent Bond, Daniel Craig from Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace, wears the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean and Seamaster Diver 300M in Casino Royale. He even mentions Omega by name when he is questioned by Vesper Lynd. Again, for the launch of this film, Omega released a 007 special of the Professional 300M watch. This featured the 007 gun logo on the second hand and a rifle pattern on the watch face.
In 2006 Omega again released a limited edition James Bond watch. This was a Seamaster Planet Ocean model with a limited run of 5007 units. This had a small orange 007 logo on the second hand, an engraved 007 on the clasp and an engraved caseback.
In Quantum Of Solace, Bond wears yet another Omega watch, the 42mm Seamaster Planet Ocean with a black face and steel bracelet. Yet again, Omega released another limited edition to capitalize on their exposure in this blockbuster movie. This watch featured a checkered PPK grip face with the Quantum Of Solace logo over it.
Over the course of 5 movies from 1995 to 2008, the Omega Seamaster Professional Diver 300M was worn by James Bond. These are a stainless steel bracelet fitted with a blue dial and unidirectional rotatin bezel with a blue ring and a sapphire crystal.
The Omega Seamaster range of watches are seen to be sophisticated and elegant, the kind of watch that would fit the suave super spy. With their tie in to the James Bond franchise, they have gone from strength to strength and have raised significant awareness of their brand.
Many James Bond fans have gone on to buy the Omega watches due to the product placement and the limited editions have proved very popular because of the tie-in with the movies.

Fernando Botero Angulo, the youngest of three brothers, was born in Medellin, Colombia on the 19th April 1932. Now, aged 79 years and currently living in Paris, Botero is regarded as the highest-paid living artist originally from Latin America.
His major works include figurative painting, drawings and sculptures of voluminous shapes and dimensions. Although his major works include portraits, bullfighting and equestrian scenes, as well as nudes and still lifes, this article will focus on the Abu Ghraib series and the death of Pablo Escobar painting.
Abu Ghraib series (2005 Exhibition) A total of more than 85 paintings and 100 drawings were produced by Botero to express his anger of the shocking treatment and abuses suffered by the detainees at Abu Ghraib prison (Iraq) during the Iraq War. Many figures have the typical rounded shape characteristic of his work but others look more like body-builders.
His work was inspired by the photographs and the United States Army report released in 2004 (although the written descriptions of the abuses inspired him more than photographs). The US Army's sadistic games that horrified the world and provoked expressions of concern and disgust among the general population included using dogs to make juveniles, some as young as 15 years old to urinate on themselves as part of a competition.
Botero's painting depicts very graphically the abuses and show men blindfolded and dressed in women's underwear; men being beaten by the army, bleeding men and women in humiliating positions with underwear on their faces; there are also naked prisoners in a human pyramid and an officer urinating on two Iraqis, one of them blindfolded; some of the drawings are too shocking to describe, however they represent a reality that occurred in Abu Ghraib
The death of Pablo Escobar Pablo Escobar Gaviria was a Colombian drug dealer native of Antioquia (same region as Fernando Botero); regarded as the richest and most successful criminal in world history; he was shot and killed in a gun battle on the rooftop of his safe house after escaping through a top floor window on the 2nd December of 1993.
Fernando Botero decided to paint his death as part of a series of paintings to reflect a simple testimony to a reality that was happening in Colombia during the 1990s; it is not intended to have a political statement but to express his disappointment and anger on the bloodshed caused by Colombia's persistent violence and its widespread drug trade.
Fernando Botero's comments about the painting "There were no photographers around the day Pablo Escobar died. But I can paint a painting that shows how I imagine his death unfolded. He was half-naked, barefoot, on a rooftop with a gun in his hand. The image is a synthesis of what occurred, and it has the power to stay in your memory, because it's an image that's been carefully composed and polished, so it goes straight to the brain"
