Harold Lloyd - Safety Last

Directed by Fred C. Newmeyer and Sam Taylor, this very enjoyable silent film is best remembered for a particularly risky stunt in which comedian Harold Lloyd hangs onto the hand of a clock that is perched on a twelve-story building above the city streets. This scene, both scary and thrilling, was shot with most of the camera compositions including the view of the perilous drop below.
The motion pictures title is based on the familiar phrase, "Safety First."
In this remarkable scene, Lloyd slowly inches his way up the twelve story building encountering a great many difficulties along the way. They include:
* pesky wing flapping pigeons that fall on him from above
* becoming completely entangled in tennis netting
* a two by four painters platform that blocks his path
* a swinging window
* the huge clock from which he dangles
* an overly aggressive dog
* a flagpole
* a mouse that decides to climb up his pant leg
* a revolving weather vane
* and, a rope that wraps around his ankle and swings him back and forth from the top of the building
This was no easy climb.
The most memorable obstacle of all was the large clock. For many moments, Lloyd hangs on to one hand of the clock while dangling above the street as the clock face slowly pulls off of the wall. This scene presents one of the most famous cinematic moments that has ever been caught on film.
When finally reaching the the top of the building, he lands in the arms of the girl he loves and the two proceed to walk off together arm and arm except for Lloyd's shoes and socks which are left behind in fresh roofing tar. He hardly notices.
Our brave and daring hero earns a thousand dollars in prize money for successfully climbing the building, along with the girl of his dreams.
Harold Lloyd is remembered as one of the great comedic stars of the silent film era alongside legends Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. He is best remembered for his remarkable stunts, all of which he insisted upon doing himself, even after one caused him to lose his right hand thumb and index finger.
Safety Last is a silent film comedy classic with the clock scene remaining as one of the most daring and extraordinary stunts ever performed during this era in film.

Birdemic: Shock And Terror

After years - hell, nearly two decades - of searching, I think I just may have found the absolute worst movie ever made. Though Michael Bay's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), my previous choice, is indeed the most mind-numbing and impossible to enjoy film I can remember seeing, at the very least it has some stellar craftsmanship in the technical departments. James Nguyen's Birdemic: Shock and Terror was clearly made without the benefit of anyone who knew absolutely anything about filmmaking within a hundred yards of the set. Witness production values and acting that make Tommy Wiseau's notorious 2003 classic The Room look like a legitimate masterpiece. Witness sound editing and mixing apparently done by a pair of deaf children. Witness the worst special effects ever seen in a feature film. Witness the musical number "Just Hangin' Out," sung onscreen in its hilarious entirety by Damien Carter. Witness the flaming wreckage of a film that is Birdemic: Shock and Terror.
A blatant and obvious rip-off of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds (1963), Birdemic actually goes so far as to claim to feature a supporting turn by one of that film's stars, Tippi Hedren, who appears in archival footage clumsily worked into the film. Obtaining permission for this footage is undoubtedly where most of Birdemic's budget went, since the film is filled with non-professional actors and the aforementioned worst special effects of all time. But we'll get to that. Alan Bagh stars as Rod (probably named after The Birds' other romantic lead, Rod Taylor), a software salesman, or something like that, who closes the biggest sale of his career at the start of the film but realizes that he is still lonely and looking for love. We know he is a moral character when he chides his friend and co-worker Tony (Colton Osborne) for only thinking about sex.
Rod meets Nathalie (Whitney Moore), a fashion model, in a restaurant one day and the two begin to date on the strength of Rod's staggeringly banal but sincere conversational skills. Seriously, dude practically picks this very attractive woman up by talking about the weather. Of course, the weather becomes a rather serious topic of conversation in Birdemic, which fancies itself a message movie along the lines of An Inconvenient Truth (2006), which it awkwardly references by name at one point: on a double date with Nathalie, Tony and Tony's girlfriend, Becky (Catherine Batcha), Rod says, "That was a good movie, An Inconvenient Truth," as though the others might have forgotten the title of the film they just saw. Birdemic is just filled with believable dialogue like this.
A full two-thirds of the movie is devoted to the developing relationship between Rod and Nathalie, as well as Rod's continued success as a... whatever salesman (I think it's software or something), with absolutely hilarious boardroom meeting scenes; we never really see Nathalie do any modeling, outside of the beginning of an amazingly awkward sex scene between her and rod, which makes the countless softcore scenes in The Room look positively erotic by comparison. With a few beers in me and the proper expectation level for a movie called Birdemic, I was thoroughly enjoying this first hour of the movie, frequently laughing out loud with great gusto. Then the birds appeared, and everything went downhill from there.
Unlike Hitchcock's Birds, which also starts with a rather lengthy exposition filled with the development of lame characters and their boring romance, Birdemic actually gets worse when its reason for existing enters the picture. The birds, which are all eagles (apparently missing the point of its inspiration - Hitchcock willfully avoided birds of prey in his film, preferring to find horror in unexpected places), look like computer screen-savers superimposed over the live action, which is basically what they are. When they attack, our heroes manage to fend them off with coathangers, though they are later seen easily dispatching men with guns. Apparently they only kill when it is convenient for the plot, such as it is.
Trying to critique this movie in any conventional way is not only futile, but absurd. You simply have to see it for yourself, and even then you won't believe it. Several times throughout the film, I asked myself, "How is this a real movie?" The sound editing is particularly awful, showing not even a rudimentary understanding of proper technique; dialogue in medium shots is frequently drowned out by background noise, which is then inexplicably gone when the scene cuts to close-ups. Each cut is usually accompanied by an abrupt silence that lasts until the next line of dialogue, which is invariably filled with the kind of background noise that would continue uninterrupted throughout the scene in a movie made by anyone who has the slightest clue how to make a movie.
But therein lies the charm of this terrible, terrible movie. It is its utter sincerity that makes it so funny. The original tagline for the film's theatrical release was "Why did the eagles attacked?" As if this could possibly be a surprise in a film whose dialogue randomly references An Inconvenient Truth and hybrid cars, as well as including an entire scene in which Rod buys solar panels for his house, the answer to this question involves a half-baked environmental message. According to a random tree-hugger (Stephen Gustavson) our heroes meet towards the end of the film, the eagles are attacking people who are filling up their gas tanks, thereby contributing to the global warming that is threatening their natural habitat. The funniest part of this scene is that, immediately after imparting this information, the tree-hugger urges our heroes to run to their car and make their getaway while the birds are distracted. I guess the birds can tell the difference between hybrid cars and gas-guzzlers; they also apparently have the cognitive capacity to choose not to harm Rod and his environmentally friendly friends despite the fact that they have been shooting the birds down throughout most of the previous scenes (after abandoning the less effective coathangers).
In addition to being basically a misguided remake of The Birds, this is also a sort of companion piece to M. Night Shyamalan's similarly sincere and hilarious 2008 environmental thriller The Happening, albeit with even worse acting and a much, much lower budget. They would make a good double feature, but neither one will change the world, as their woefully inept auteurs seem to have in mind. Perhaps the upcoming sequel, Birdemic II: The Resurrection, due out in September, will have the intended impact. I seriously doubt it, but you can bet I'll be first in line to see it. After all, this one's going to be in 3-D.

How to Care for Art Supplies

Understanding how to look after art supplies such as paint brushes is essential for both expert and amateur artists.
A paint brush is arguably the most important of all art supplies as it helps you express what you want to create on canvas so it is crucial to keep it in prime condition as a poor quality brush often results in a sub standard painting.
There are a number of factors to consider before buying a paint brush with the quality of construction vital as buyers must ensure that the tuft is correctly shaped and fixed into the handle.
It obviously helps to know certain technical terms when buying a brush and understanding that the handle is called the ferrule and the tip of the bristles is referred to as the toe should assist a purchase.
When buying a brush online it can be hard to judge its size so always check the number on the side of the handle as the smallest size is 00 and increases in a sliding scale up to 0, 1, 2 and so on.
Another factor to take into consideration is what medium you are painting with as with oil paints it is appropriate to buy brushes with either natural hog bristles or closely related synthetic which are recognisable by their stiffness.
Purists will always favour natural hair because of its flexibility and strength but if you have a problem using animal hair, modern synthetic brushes are very similar and are often much cheaper.
Synthetic brushes should be purchased when working with acrylic paints because they resist water, while for watercolours a responsive brush is the correct choice due to its heightened sensitivity and even distribution of paint.
After you have bought the most suitable brush for your painting, you should ensure that you have mild soap or turpentine and some tissue as well as lukewarm water an area to dry the brushes.
Excess paint should be wiped off with a soft cloth or tissue and then the brush should be rinsed in turpentine if using oil paints but in lukewarm water if the paints are water based.
Always ensure the water is lukewarm because hot water can damage brush hairs and cause them to fall out and in order to protect the brush further it is important to wash it with mild soap.
This process should be repeated until no paint colour comes from the brush and it returns to its original colour and shape but if it appears misshapen then use your fingers to caress the hairs back into place.

Treat The Whole Family To Your Favorite Story With Audio Books

Books used to be things that you had to sit down in a peaceful place to read, but now there are audio books. At one time audiobooks were almost only available in academic settings and very few novels were created this way. Eventually the fast pace lifestyle of the modern world caught up with even the most diehard readers and left little time to be spent with a book in hand. Now just about any fiction or non-fiction novel that is printed also comes out in digital format or at least in CD format. Whether you are behind the wheel on your way to your job or at the fitness center hitting the weights you can have your favorite classics read to you from your MP3 device. Having your books read to you may seem like a all too simple way to enjoy them, but even listening to a book can have its benefits on your intellect. All the benefits of reading on the mind are still intact with an added emphasis on being able to multitask.
Many times throughout school you will be required to read specific books in order to get through a class. You most likely have more than one class to prepare for, so reading a bunch of books may end up taking up a lot of valuable time. If you're running out of time before your deadline being able to pop your favorite book into a CD player can be quite a convenience. You could also listen while cleaning house, doing yard work, or exercising. Doing the dishes and mowing the lawn may even be a bit more entertaining with a good book being spoken to you. No matter if you have a particular text you need to read or just want to enjoy an old favorite you'll most likely be able to find what you're looking for in audio format.
If you are a commuter or someone who travels regularly taking along a few digital books can help to make the time go by much quicker. You can use this time while alone to listen to novels by your favorite author or to even learn about yoga, another language, and more. Those with a religious background may even like to have their beloved texts read to them for a moment of worship on the go.
You can get your whole family involved in choosing a book you will all enjoy. It helps to increase reading within a family and most children and young adult books can be found in this style. Eventually you might be able to drop some of the time your family spends watching television. Listen to a great story while carrying the kids to their school and get them ready to learn.
Audio books may not have the same effect on the brain as regular reading but it certainly helps. At home with the family or in the car all alone, there is no bad place to listen to a good book. Increase your IQ and save yourself a ton of time by simply listening to an audio book.
